Fear of the Lord
Tuesday Devotional: We are now focusing on the book of Proverbs!
The basic idea behind wisdom is skill. The term is used in the Old Testament to describe the abilities of garment makers, craftsmen, gold smiths, sailors even professional mourners at funerals.
The book of Proverbs uses the word to speak of the skill of living life in a way that honors God. A wise person has the ability to adapt his or her life to God’s pattern. What distinguishes Biblical wisdom from the so-called wisdom of the other ancient nations is its foundation in the fear of God. Since God is the source of wisdom, reverence for God is the controlling principle for applying wise observations about the way lie works.
LISTEN TO TODAY’S READING
VERSES 1-7 FROM THE BIBLE
VERSES 1-7: The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young, let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance, for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
VERSES 1-7 CATHY’S THOUGHTS
The book of proverbs is very powerful and there are a lot of things repeated several times. Whenever things are repeated in the bible, I take note, because typically there is significance and importance in the repeated lesson.
What a way to start out a book, letting us know exactly what this book is for
Verses 1-6
- For gaining wisdom
- For gaining and receiving instruction
- For gaining understanding
- For showing us how we should behave
- For letting us do what is right and fair
- For giving us grace for people that don’t understand
- For giving a guidebook to young people
- To remind us to be WISE and pay attention to what is taught in this book
- To remind us to ask the Lord for discernment and understanding of what He is trying to teach us in this book
Verse 7 is really powerful; this is having a great reverence and respect for the Lord. Knowing that HIS wisdom is all we need. If we are foolish we will ignore everything in this book and most likely the entire bible.
As a bonus to really bring home the importance of the fear of the Lord I have included a song below that a friend of mine wrote and composed.
BONUS
Listen to one of the most talented women that I know and one of the most beautiful and powerful songs regarding the Fear of the Lord.
