PROVERBS 6:20-35
It’s interesting that already there is a second passage of Scriptures warning against adultery. We saw this in Proverbs 5:1-23 and here again in chapter 6:20-35. Whenever there is a message more than once it must be really important to God and something to really pay attention to. Adultery can take many forms from physical, emotional and even spiritual. There are also really harsh consequences of this activity. For me personally, I am unable to comprehend why people to do this and it astonishes me the length people will go to continue that relationship. It’s also interesting to me that this topic is brought up again right after the things that God hates
VERSES 20:22 My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
VERSES 23-25 For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life, keeping you from your neighbor’s wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman. Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.
VERSES 26-35 For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man’s wife preys on your very life. Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself. Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away. For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. He will not accept any compensation, he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
CATHY’S THOUGHTS PROVERBS 6:20-35
VERSES 20:22 This type of guidance is common throughout Proverbs where the parents are working together to keep them out of destructive behavior. They are using unified parental instruction and the father is commanding the son to listen to the guidance his mother is providing. This warning occurs several times throughout the book of Proverbs; we will keep track of this warning.
VERSES 23-25 These verses are letting the young man know that the guidance they are providing are going to keep him from heartache and trouble. This is in fact talking about being with another man’s women/wife. They are strictly forbidding this type of behavior and then warn him of what will happen if he does.
VERSES 26-33 in these verses the parents are telling the son in clear analogies that he will NOT be able to sleep with another mans women without incurring some form of pain and punishment. It will ruin him in many ways, and he may never recover. Is it worth this one moment of pleasure? Because a thief is punished sevenfold and his life will go on once he pays for this sin. However, someone that commits adultery is going to pay the consequence for the rest of their life with disgrace and shame. basically, in the beginning of this passage, its almost suggesting if you need a women so bad, go buy a prostitute before you mess with another man’s women. The husband of the women who you violate will never show mercy or forgiveness to you; this is an unforgivable act.
