Warnings Against Folly
Tuesday Devotional: Power packed, wisdom, guiding book of Proverbs.
LISTEN TO TODAY’S READING
PROVERBS 6:1-15
My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth.
So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands:
- Go, to the point of exhaustion, and give your neighbor no rest!
- Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids.
- Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
- Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.
A troublemaker and a villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth, who winks maliciously with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers, who plots evil with deceit in his heart, he always stirs up conflict. Therefore, disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.
PROVERBS 6:1-15 CATHY’S THOUGHTS
Folly = Lack of good sense; Foolishness
Verses 1-2 In those days it was not heard of to either take money for work done for someone else nor to be in debt or provide a loan to another. It’s also saying that we should not be a surety; a person who takes responsibility for another’s performance of an undertaking, for example their appearing in court or the payment of a debt. Either way we can become trapped by owing the debt or money being owed to us.
Verses 3-5 so the Lord is saying to get yourself out of this (either way). If you are in debt work until you are out of debt, do whatever you can do to make sure that you pay back the money owed to you. If you have loaned money to someone don’t let them rest until they have paid you back. Basically, go and do what you can until you can’t go any further to pay what is owed and don’t let that person rest that owes you. Get yourself out from under debt as quick as you possibly can
Verses 6-8 humans can learn from a creature as small as an ant. Look at how the ant lives. The ant does not borrow or become in debt. The ant is self-sufficient and works constantly. The ant plans and stores food in advance for things that could happen.Diligence in our business and life is wisdom and our duty; this is what the Lord is showing us
Verses 9-11 to me personally I think the meaning of this scripture implies for the people who choose to live on extended unemployment. People living a lifestyle that depends on the government. People who expect and are waiting for someone else to take care of them. These people are lazy and they are idle; and without a purpose according to scriptures.
Verses 12-15 there is nothing we can do to help someone who chooses to be lazy, who chooses to expect others to take care of them, that chooses to steal or take from others (because they think they deserve it or too lazy to work for it). These people typically are also the people stirring up conflict, riots, protests and causing trouble for their own gain. These evil people in the end will suffer the consequences and their lives will come to ruin. Look at the reasons of the people that have ended up in prison and the actions they chose that got them there.
