LISTEN TO LESSON 12 (SEMESTER THREE)
TODAY’S THOUGHT
THE ONLY EVENT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD THAT YOU CAN CONTROL IS WHAT YOU ARE THINKING AND FEELING AT THIS PRESENT MOMENT
TODAY’S TAKEAWAYS
- You are an extremely valuable, worthwhile, significant person even though your present circumstances may have you feeling otherwise.
- Self-confidence is more narrowly focused on a particular skill or type of situation.
- Self-esteem is a deeper feeling that you have about yourself, about your value as a person.
- Without even knowing it, you may be moving through life with your brakes on, if your self-esteem and confidence is low.
- High self-esteem is the common denominator for high achievement and excellence.
- Once you have designed a “pattern of truth” you tend to behave according to that truth.
- Your present self-esteem is a cumulative result of the negative and positive thoughts over the course of your life.
- The person at the low end of the scale of self-esteem is convinced they are worthless, insignificant, and unlikable.
ACTION STEPS FOR GREATER SELF ACCEPTANCE
- Constructive Imagination: build a positive affirmation about your worthiness and include it in your list of images that you are reinforcing every day.
- Decide: choose to focus on your success and what you feel good about instead of wallowing in your failures and things that you don’t feel good about.
- Pre-Program: have some positive thoughts ready for the next time your mind starts go the wrong direction and you can change that direction with a new thought, a more empowering thought.
- Epi-Organisms: choose who you spend time with
- Help Others: give praise, admiration, or respect to others. Help them feel better about themselves.
TODAY’S INSTRUCTOR: JAMES W. NEWMAN
James Ward Newman, (September 12, 1941-March 2014) a pioneer in the self-help field and an early advocate of self-esteem in books and lectures, whose books included “Release Your Brakes,”.
In 1961, Newman founded the organization PACE, an acronym coined from Personal and Company Effectiveness, and he was president of the organization until his death. His four- to six-day seminars targeted audiences ranging from company sales staffs to teenagers.
The PACE® Organization was founded in 1961 by James W. Newman, a pioneering behavioral scientist whose study of high-performance people identified a group of habits, attitudes and patterns of behavior which appeared to be common denominators of high levels of success and achievement in all walks of life. From the beginning the purpose of PACE® has been to help already successful people better understand just what made it possible for them to make productive use of their talents and training and to provide clear methods with which to further enhance their personal and professional success.
In 1988, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors named Newman chairman of the county’s Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal Responsibility.
“The human brain is the smallest, most efficient computer ever constructed by unskilled labor,” Newman typically began a seminar in 1967.
Although he utilized psychiatric principles, Newman was neither a certified psychiatrist nor psychologist. But he was an experienced speaker, writer and pitchman whose early jobs included radio and television announcer, door-to-door salesman and advertising writer.
Born in Jacksonville, Ill., and raise in Webster Groves, Mo., Newman studied at Washington University, Westminster College and Iowa State University and served as a Navy officer during World War II.
Newman was a member of boards of the Thomas Jefferson Research Center, the Network Connection and the National Speakers Assn.
He was also a veteran magician and was a member of Hollywood’s Magic Castle.
