Glühwein

I lived in Germany for six years while I was in the military and one of my favorite drinks was this hot spiced mulled wine. They served it all the ski areas for free, which was a bit dangerous because this stuff is strong, and it can go to your head pretty quick.

The drink is called Glühwein and it’s a German/Austrian winter-holiday drink also known as an apre-ski drink. When you drink it outside it’s supposed to make you glow with warmth.

I still enjoy making this and keeping on the stove to enjoy after skiing, for holiday parties, or just cause its a snowy cold day!

It’s super simple to make and you can tweak it to your taste buds and strength. Enjoy!!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 orange
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 1 bottle red wine

Directions

  • In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer.
  • Cut the orange in half and squeeze the juice into the simmering water.
  • Push the cloves into the outside of the orange peel, and place peel in the simmering water.
  • Continue simmering for 30 minutes, until thick and syrupy.
  • Pour in the wine, and heat until steaming but not simmering.
  • Remove the clove-studded orange halves.
  • Serve hot in mugs or glasses that have been preheated in warm water (cold glasses will break.)

***Keep on hand extra cinnamon sticks for serving
